X – Where You Can’t Install Smoke Alarms in a Home

  • In roof cavities, crawl spaces, or wall cavities (they won’t detect early smoke)

4. Wet, Steamy, or Dusty Areas (Avoid)

  • Bathrooms
  • Laundries
  • Garages (if fumes present)
  • Near cooking appliances
  • Within 1.5 metres of a kitchen stove
  • Not close to electronic interference

If you are selling or renting a property, it must be fully compliant before the sale or lease can proceed. From 1 January 2027, all homes in Queensland — including owner-occupied properties — must meet the full requirements.

You are responsible for testing alarms monthly, keeping them clean, and replacing them before they expire. Installing compliant alarms is not just a legal requirement — it dramatically increases your chances of escaping a fire safely.
